Shopify Liquid Basics for Beginners

By Codehouse · Shopify Experts in Pakistan4 min read

Liquid is Shopify's templating language — the glue between your store's data and its HTML. Learn the basics and you can customise a theme far beyond what the settings panel allows.

The three building blocks

  • Objects hold data such as a product, collection or cart, and are output with double curly braces.
  • Tags provide logic like loops and conditionals, written with curly-brace-percent markers.
  • Filters transform output, for example formatting a price or resizing an image.

A simple example

To list the products in a collection, you loop over them, print each title and price, and format the price with a filter. That one pattern powers most of what you see on a Shopify storefront, and once it clicks the rest follows naturally.

From editing to building

Begin by editing an existing section, then move on to building your own reusable sections with schema settings. Clean, well-structured Liquid keeps a theme fast and easy to extend.
