Shopify offers several discount types: percentage off, a fixed amount, free shipping and buy-X-get-Y. You can restrict codes by usage count, customer, minimum spend or date, and combine some discounts depending on your settings. Used well, discounts create urgency and reward loyal customers; used carelessly, they eat into margin.
A scenario worth knowing about
Picture a store build that goes smoothly for two weeks, and the client is happy — until the final request: apply two separate discounts to the same product at the same time. Out of the box, Shopify doesn't stack two discounts on a single item. Doing it cleanly requires a Shopify Function or an app, and if the client doesn't want an app, the project can stall at the last step.
The lesson is that discount rules that sound simple — "just add two discounts" — often aren't straightforward on Shopify. Setting that expectation early saves everyone time and money.
The good news
With Shopify Functions, custom stacking and combined discounts are entirely possible today. If you have unusual discount logic in mind, tell your developer at the start so it can be scoped and built from day one.
Need more than the basics?
For advanced logic such as tiered or automatic discounts, you'll likely need Functions. Codehouse builds custom discount logic that fits your promotions and protects your margins.
