Building a License Management System

If you sell software, themes, plugins or digital products, sooner or later you need to control who may use them. A license management system does that by issuing, validating and revoking licenses, so paying customers get access and unauthorised copies don't.

What a license system does

• Issues license keys automatically at purchase.
• Validates activations by checking a key is genuine and within its limits.
• Locks usage to a domain, a device or a seat count.
• Handles renewals and expiry for subscription products.

How domain or device locking works

The product contacts your license server to confirm that the key is valid for that domain or device. If it's valid and active, the product runs; if not, features are switched off. The logic must be dependable and reasonably tamper-resistant while staying friendly to legitimate customers who move servers or reinstall.

Design decisions that matter

Where to store keys, how to handle offline grace periods, how many activations a license allows, and how to make revocation clean. Get the balance wrong and you either frustrate honest users or leave the door open to piracy. A good system is strict on abuse but forgiving of ordinary customer behaviour.

Build vs third-party

Third-party licensing services can be quick to start, but they add ongoing fees and hand control (and customer data) to someone else. A custom system gives you full ownership, no per-license fees and logic tuned to your product.
