Custom Website vs. Shopify: What Should You Choose?

By Codehouse · Shopify Experts in Pakistan6 min read

We build both Shopify stores and fully custom web applications, so we get asked this a lot — and we don't have a horse in the race. The right choice depends on what you're selling and how your business actually runs.

Choose Shopify when…

  • You're selling products online and your main workflow is browse, cart, checkout, ship.
  • You want secure payments, hosting, uptime and PCI compliance handled for you.
  • Your team wants to manage products, discounts and content without a developer.
  • You need to launch quickly and grow into features over time.

Choose a custom build when…

  • Your core workflow isn't a shop — bookings, quotations, multi-step approvals, field sales or distribution.
  • You need complex user roles, such as admins, branch managers, distributors and sales reps each seeing different data.
  • Pricing or order logic depends on rules that don't fit a product catalogue.
  • You need to run on your own servers or integrate tightly with local systems, such as tax reporting.

The hybrid that often wins

Many businesses need both. Shopify runs the customer-facing store, while a custom system handles what happens behind it: inventory across warehouses, distributor orders, invoicing or reporting. The two talk through Shopify's APIs, so each does what it's best at.

Cost over time, not just at launch

Shopify has monthly plan and app fees but very low maintenance overhead. A custom build costs more upfront and needs hosting, backups, security updates and someone who knows the code. Compare the total cost over two or three years — not just the first invoice.

Questions to ask yourself

  • Is my business mostly selling products, or managing a process?
  • Who will update the site day to day?
  • Which parts of my workflow do off-the-shelf tools fail at?
  • What happens if the developer who built it is unavailable?

If you're unsure, tell us how your business works end to end. We'll recommend Shopify, a custom build or a mix — whichever is the simplest thing that will actually hold up.
